Metronidazole is an antiprotozoal agent and antibacterial used by veterinarians to treat diarrheal diseases, certain bacterial infections, protozoal infections, such as Giardiasis, and inflammatory bowel disease. Also may be used as treatment of periodontal disease (infection in the mouth) and other susceptible bacterial infections. In horses it is most commonly used to treat infections with anaerobic bacteria, including Clostridium.
